Siberian Huskies are beautiful dogs. They look like wolves, and have awesome thick, and soft coats that make them infinitely cuddly. Many Siberian Huskies have blue eyes, and wonderful masks that give them a roguish and unique look.

Siberian Huskies can make very good pets, and if properly trained, they can be very good with people, children, and other dogs. Indeed, Siberian Huskies are commonly known for their friendliness to all humans. Although they make look like fierce wolves, they have the heart of Casanova. All they want to do is to go greet everyone and give them licks.

However, many Siberian Husky owners have trouble with this breed. As a result, many Siberians get surrendered by owners who are unprepared to handle some of the unique traits that make the Siberian Husky into such a special, and lovable breed.

1. Siberian Huskies SHED - A LOT



Be ready to have dog hair all over the place - floors, carpets, clothing, furniture, etc. If you are allergic to dog hair, or like your home to be really clean, then the Siberian Husky is not for you.

When I was looking for a Siberian Husky, I talked to a few breeders in the area, and the first thing they all said was that Siberian Huskies shed a lot. I mentioned that my other dog, a Shiba Inu, also has a double coat, and also sheds, but they all said, "Siberian Huskies shed a lot more". And they do! A whole lot more.

It is therefore, very important to train your Siberian Husky puppy to enjoy the brushing experience. Initially, start with a soft brush, and just lightly brush the body for a short period of time. Do this often, and pair it with food rewards. Once your Siberian Husky is comfortable with the brushing process, you can slowly extend the length of the brushing session, and switch to using the Furminator, which is a very good tool for getting the loose hair out. Frequent brushing is a good idea to keep your Siberian Husky clean, and to clear out loose, dead hair. The more hair on the Furminator, the less hair on the floor.

About twice a year, Siberian Huskies blow their coat. In these times, there will be more fur than ever. To keep things under control, try to brush everyday. Remember to always keep brushing sessions fun, rewarding, and not overly long.

If you want a dog that is only loyal to you and your family, then the Siberian Husky is not for you. A Siberian Husky is a happy, goofy, trusting, dog that likes being with everyone. Why accept affection from only one or two people when you can get it from everyone around you?

3. Siberian Huskies are Extremely Energetic

Siberian Huskies are extremely intelligent and extremely athletic. After all, they were bred to pull sleds for extremely long distances, in the freezing cold. So be prepared to provide your Siberian Husky with a lot of mental and physical stimulation.

A young Siberian Husky needs activity almost all day round. My one-year old Husky sleeps for perhaps 3-4 hours during the day, and about 10 hours during the night. That leaves about 10 hours during the day where she is on the go. She drains her energy most by playing with my other dog, a 2 year old Shiba Inu. However, even my Shiba Inu can't fully keep up with her, so in addition to the playing, she works for all of her food, has long walks in the park three times a week, has human-play and training sessions during the day, as well as explores and digs in our large backyard.

If bored, a Siberian can become unhappy, and will likely escape, and/or use your belongings and your house as chew toys. Unless your backyard is extremely secure, Siberians can easily jump over or dig under a fence to find adventure elsewhere.

If you are away at work for most of the day, then the Siberian Husky is not for you. Siberians like having company and activity all day long. It is possible that a Siberian can keep himself occupied if you have other dogs, but they may also lead your other dogs into mischief. Siberians do best when there is frequent human supervision during the day.

4. Siberian Huskies are Independent Thinkers



Siberian Huskies have very independent spirits. As a result, they will only "perform", if you make it worth their while. If you want an obedient dog, that lives to please you, then the Siberian Husky is not for you. Siberians are not a "yes sir, no sir", kind of dog.

To live well with a Siberian, you need to be fair, but firm. Be consistent with enforcing your house rules, or the Siberian will take over the house. The best way to train a Siberian is through the control of resources. Teach your Siberian that the best way to get what they want, is to first do what you want. Use reward based training and follow the NILIF program. Harsher techniques, can make a Siberian distrustful, and ruin the trusting, free spirit, of the breed.

Siberian Huskies are independent hunters. Their original breeders, the Chukchi of Northeastern Asia, used to let their Siberians free during the summer months, to hunt for food on their own. This has two very important consequences for living with a Siberian Husky today:

1. Siberians are not to be trusted with cats, or other small animals. They can be trained to live with cats, but their instinct is to hunt them;
2. Siberians are not to be trusted off-leash. If they see a small animal, they will likely bolt after it and forget about cars, commands, and everything else. By the time they come to their senses, they may be lost and far from home.

Siberians are bred to run and pull. This makes them more difficult to leash train than many other breeds. To train a Siberian to walk on a leash, you need to have an immense amount of patience. Always be firm and consistent with the no-pulling rule, and reward good behavior. If you do not have a large backyard, bring your Siberian to a secure, enclosed park, or soccer field, so that he can have some nice off-leash time to run, run, run.

5. Siberian Huskies are Not Easy to Potty Train



Siberian Huskies are not the easiest dogs to potty train. Certain dogs, like the Shiba Inu, are naturally clean, and absolutely do not like soiling their living space. Because of their natural cleanliness, they are extremely easy to house train. Siberians do not have that natural sense of cleanliness. In fact, they do not mind playing and running around their own waste products. So you must make it worth their while to potty outside.

Supervise your Siberian Husky puppy at all times until he is fully potty trained. Reward him very well for pottying outside with very high priority treats, play, and praise. If you are consistent with your potty training, they will learn quickly, and be very happy to potty outside after a few weeks.

Some things to look out for from a good breeder:

1. A good breeder will usually want to meet up with you, or interview you over the phone before selling you one of their puppies. The more questions the breeder asks you, the better, because that shows he/she cares what kind of home the puppy is moving to.
2. A good breeder will show you the mother and father (if available) of the puppies and let you interact with them. The temperament of the parents are important because it will affect the temperament of the puppies.
3. A good breeder usually breeds from champion bloodlines, and will usually provide you with the puppy’s “family tree” that will contain many champions.
4. A good breeder will have proper health certifications for the puppies’ parents. This will vary by breed, as different breeds will have different common genetic issues. A Siberian Husky breeder should have eye certifications for the puppy's parents.
5. A good breeder will give you some kibble, a blanket that smells like the litter, and sometimes a crate and some toys. This will make the transition of homes easier for the puppy. The kibble and smelly blanket are especially important.

If possible, it is a good idea to get your puppy from a local breeder. A good local breeder will hook you up with local breed club activities, and will also be available to help you with puppy issues. My breeder also visits me from time to time, and we get to set up some fun play sessions with her dogs.
